How Amairris Went from a 148 to a 165 LSAT Score and Earned 3 Full-Ride Scholarships

When Amairris first reached out to us, she was juggling a full-time job and preparing for the LSAT. Together, we developed a study plan that worked for her schedule. Her busy work schedule meant that studying for the LSAT had to take a backseat to her day job. We focused on making incremental improvements over time, while also ensuring that her study schedule was sustainable for her in order to avoid burnout. Over the span of those two years, Amairris brought her LSAT score up from a diagnostic of 148 to an official LSAT score of 165.

When it came time for Amairris to begin the application process, she felt a bit lost. She had the stats to apply to the T-14 but was more interested in finding a local school that would give her a significant scholarship. She was interested in applying to the T-14 to see what options she might have, but she focused her efforts on schools in Chicago, Detroit, and the Midwest.

Amairris worked with JurisPrep to put together applications that highlighted her background in public interest legal work while also demonstrating her commitment to returning to her Detroit community after finishing law school. She applied to a dozen law schools and earned admission to a T-14 school (the University of Michigan) and was waitlisted at another (Duke). However, she also received full scholarships from three Chicago-area law schools and, most importantly, her alma mater, Wayne State.

For Amairris, Wayne State was the best possible outcome. She was able to stay at home in Detroit, saving money on her cost of living while also attending a highly-ranked law school, tuition-free. She is now in her first year at Wayne State Law. After graduation, she hopes to work for a legal aid organization that provides family law services to domestic violence victims and general civil law services to those who otherwise would not be able to afford them. . Regardless of how she gets there, her goal is to return to working in public interest.

When we asked Amairris what she thought of her experience working with JurisPrep throughout the entire LSAT and law school application process, she said,
“Working with JurisPrep made a huge difference for me. I am a first-generation law student and was fairly in the dark about the application process. My coach helped me iron out all of my essays in a little over a month. He helped me finalize my list of schools and pushed me to go outside my comfort zone and apply to T-14 schools. I got accepted to Michigan largely because of his encouragement and assistance with my applications.
Amairris grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and attended Wayne State for undergrad. She majored in Criminal Justice with a minor in English and graduated with a 3.7 GPA. While she was an undergrad student, she was active on campus, serving as a mentor within her community and working on criminal justice reform initiatives at Wayne State’s Criminal Justice Department. She also interned at her state Appellate Defender’s Office.

Between graduating from undergrad and applying to law school, Amairris worked first as a legislative staff assistant for her congressman and then joined a legal aid organization where she worked as a legal assistant.
